About me

My name is Kirsten Heer, I was born in Hamburg in 1953 and have been taking photos since 1963.

From 1974-1977 I learned black and white photography from scratch from a really outstanding photographer, Michael von Gimbut in Hamburg. I had a Nikon camera and at the time I was shooting analog, of course.

I developed my films (mostly Ilford 400 ASA) under selected conditions in the darkroom and enlarged the nicely contrasting negatives on rather „hard“ paper.

From 1977 to 1980 I ran a photo studio on Wexstrasse in Hamburg and photographed [focused on] fashion and beauty. I was always very interested in capturing the individual’s beauty.

I then started taking photos again in May 2010, now digitally. Initially I used an Olympus reflex camera with an Apple computer and a Canon A3 printer. I then moved on to a Nikon.

It is astonishing how much this medium still fascinates and keeps exciting me every day. I never imagined that it would be possible to achieve the same or even better black and white quality as in the good old darkroom days. However my prior experience serves me very well today when taking photos and on the screen.

You could perhaps characterize me as addicted to beautiful and impressive pictures. I clearly have a passion for „painting with light“ (Greek for photography). I like to deal with people and am impressed by Nature’s beauty!
